Ascended armor and weapons are, for the most part, not easy to get. You can either cross your fingers and hope for a drop (most commonly from fractals, pvp, or world bosses such as Tequatl or Triple Trouble), or you can craft them. Crafting ascended weapons and especially armor is a drawn-out and expensive process. There aren’t many shortcuts to that process.

However, Ascended trinkets are much easier to come by! Trinkets include two rings, two accessories, one amulet, and one backpiece. Almost all stat combinations for exotic trinkets are available in ascended – and some that aren’t exotic-available. They account for a lot of your stats, and often times are as easy to get as exotic trinkets – if you know where to buy them.

Before we begin – a quick note: Many collections and achievements offer ascended trinkets as a reward. Some of these, particularly the Sinister-stat variants, may then be purchased cheaply (well, relatively) at certain vendors. More detailed information can be found at the wiki.

Ascended Rings

Ascended rings drop frequently from daily Fractal achievement boxes – so you may not end up needing to buy any, at all. However, if you’re unlucky with drops, or just don’t want to wait, here are some options! For players with the Heart of Thorns expansion, ascended rings can be purchased in two more ways: Blood Rubies and Magnetite Shards.

Pristine Fractal Relics

The cheapest method of buying these is with 10 Pristine Fractal Relics, which are earned through the Fractals dungeon, at difficulty level 10 and above (your account reward level must also be 10+).

Laurels and Badges of Honor

Another option is from the WvW Laurel Vendor, who sells them for 25 laurels and 250 badges of honour. However, this is not recommended due to the comparatively high value of laurels.

Blood Rubies – req. HoT

Blood Rubies are obtained in the Living Story Season 3 map, Bloodstone Fen.The Blood Ruby Bands cost 100 Blood Rubies and 2,000 Unbound Magic. These rings allow you to choose your desired stat combination, and are unique in that they allow you to select new stats once per day at the cost of a Bloodstone Capacitor.

Winterberries – req. HoT

Winterberries are found in the LS3 map, Bitterfrost Frontier. The Black Ice Bands cost 200 Winterberries and 2,000 Unbound Magic. They are stat-selectable, but unlike the Blood Ruby Bands, cannot be stat swapped after initial selection via an item. However, Winterberries are easier to obtain than Blood Rubies by a significant margin. However, the stats can be re-selected twice – when the ring is Attuned and when it is Infused.

Fire Orchid Blossoms – req. HoT

Fire Orchid Blossoms are found in the LS3 map, Draconis Mons. If the player has done the Wayfarer’s Henge collection, the Fire Orchid Seeds they planted will be available to harvest in the additional areas they were planted (such as Mount Maelstrom and Cursed Shore). The Gilded Orchid Bands cost 100 Fire Orchid Blossoms and 2,000 Unbound Magic. They are stat-selectable, but unlike the Blood Ruby Bands, cannot be stat swapped after initial selection via an item. However, the stats can be re-selected twice – when the ring is Attuned and when it is Infused.

Magnetite Shards – req. HoT

Magnetite shards can only be obtained by participating in Raids. Rings are available at the cost of 175 Magnetite Shards and 10 gold. This is not a recommended method of obtaining ascended rings, due to the comparatively high cost.

Ascended Accessories

For accessories (the two slots above your ring slots), you have similar options to the previous. For players with the Heart of Thorns expansion, ascended trinkets may also be purchased with Magnetite Shards and Petrified Wood.

Guild Commendations

The cheapest method without requiring the Heart of Thorns expansion is using Guild Commendations, which are earned every week (up to 15/week) if your guild is able to complete all available guild missions. Trinkets cost 12 commendations and 5 gold per each.

Laurels – NOT RECOMMENDED

Ascended accessories purchased with laurels cost 40 laurels and 50 ectoplasm (!!!!!) apiece. That’s bananas.

Petrified Wood – req. HoT

Petrified Wood can be obtained in the Living Story Season 3 area, Ember BaySparking Petrified Wood can be purchased for 150 Petrified Wood and 4,000 Unbound Magic. These accessories allow you to choose your desired stat combination.

Winterberries – req. HoT

Winterberries can be obtained in the Living Story Season 3 area, Bitterfrost FrontierBlack Ice Earrings can be purchased for 300 Winterberries and 4,000 Unbound Magic. These accessories allow you to choose your desired stat combination. This item is “unique” – meaning only one can be equipped per character.

Magnetite Shards – req. HoT

Magnetite shards can only be obtained by participating in Raids. Rings are available at the cost of 200 Magnetite Shards and 10 gold. This is not a recommended method of obtaining ascended trinkets, due to the comparatively high cost.

Ascended Amulets

Firstly, I want to stress that if you are obtaining ascended gear for the purposes of raising your agony resist, you do not need an ascended amulet. Amulets can no longer hold agony resist infusions, and instead only accept Enrichment upgrades.

Laurels and Badges of Honor

These are best acquired in World vs World. In your homeworld’s borderlands, there’s a special WvW Laurel Vendor. He sells amulets for 20 laurels and 250 badges. Purchased without Badges, amulets cost 30 laurels.

Vial of Salt

If you don’t have enough Laurels, or Badges, or just would prefer to spend gold instead of other currencies, you can craft a Vial of Salt. It doesn’t cost much (about 30 gold at the time of this writing), and has selectable stats.

Blood Rubies – req. HoT

The Blood Ruby Pendants cost 125 Blood Rubies and 3,000 Unbound Magic. These are unique to other trinkets in that they allow you to select new stats once per day at the cost of a Bloodstone Capacitor.

Fire Orchid Blossoms – req. HoT

The Fire Orchid Garlands cost 125 Fire Orchid Blossoms and 3,000 Unbound Magic.

Jade Shards – req. HoT

Jade Shards can be obtained in the Living Story Season 3 map, Lake Doric. The Jade Pendants cost 125 Jade Shards and 3,000 Unbound Magic.

Orrian Pearls – req. HoT

Orrian Pearls can be obtained in the Living Story Season 3 map, Siren’s Landing. The Coral Chokers cost 125 Orrian Pearls and 3,000 Unbound Magic. Considering the ease with which Orrian Pearls can be obtained, this is my current recommendation for obtaining amulets.

Magnetite Shards – req. HoT

Magnetite shards can only be obtained by participating in Raids. Amulets are available at the cost of 150 Magnetite Shards and 10 gold.

Ascended Backpieces

Ascended backpieces may be crafted, but are costly to do so. It is recommended that you buy them, and there are several options for prospective purchasers. Keep in mind that these costs do NOT include Infusion, which costs 250 Ectoplasm across the board.

Fractal Relics

The Prototype Fractal Capacitor is one of the cheaper ways of getting an ascended backpiece. The initial piece is bought for 1,350 fractal relics (not pristine), and is exotic. However, it can be made ascended in the mystic forge with a Gift of Ascension, which costs a further 500 relics. This is the cheapest option if you own neither Living Story season 2 nor Heart of Thorns.

Blood Rubies – req. HoT

The Blood Ruby Backpack is both a unique skin, and is relatively easy to obtain. It costs only 200 Blood Rubies and 5,000 Unbound magic. Like the rings, the stats on this backpiece are selectable, and may be reset once per day.

Petrified Wood – req. HoT

The Lava Skull Backpack is another unique skin, and similarly cheap to purchase. It costs 200 Petrified Wood and 5,000 Unbound Magic. The stats on this backpiece are selectable, but may not be reset.

Winterberries – req. HoT

The Icebrood Horn Backpack follows in the theme of the other LS3 backpacks. It costs 400 Winterberries and 5,000 Unbound Magic. The stats on this backpiece are selectable, but may not be reset.

Jade Shards – req. HoT

The White Mantle Scroll follows in the theme of the other LS3 backpacks. It costs 200 Jade Shards and 5,000 Unbound Magic. The stats on this backpiece are selectable, but may not be reset.

Orrian Pearls – req. HoT

You’re spoiled for choice, here. There is not one but five backpacks available to purchase for Orrian Pearls: The Relics of Balthazar, Dwayna, Grenth, Lyssa, and Melandru. Each one costs 200 Orrian Pearls and 315,000 karma, and all have selectable stats. Finally, there is a sixth backpack available via collection, if you purchase all 5 backpacks: the Relic of Abaddon.

Magnetite Shards – req. HoT

Xera’s Backpiece (link is for the Assaulter’s variant – several variants exist to cover all stat combinations) is an option for raiders. It has a unique skin, and costs 600 Magnetite Shards and 20 gold.

Mawdrey – req. LS2

Next is Mawdrey, a unique backpiece that is built in multiple stages from rare to ascended. The pros to it is that it has a relatively low gold investment (much of it can be farmed directly) and it also grants an item called Mawdrey II (an item that “eats” bloodstone dust and gives you random loot).

The cons to it are that it requires access to the Season 2 of the Living Story. If your account is new or you did not log in every 2 weeks during that time, you will need to purchase the episodes you are missing in order to obtain certain items for crafting the backpiece. The gem cost may be prohibitive, but it should be mentioned that the other rewards from Season 2 are pretty generous and (in my opinion) worth it. The other con is that it requires a heavy time/effort investment. Several of the steps are time-gated, and the majority of the crafting of this backpiece is essentially a scavenger hunt throughout Tyria.

The Wayfarer’s Henge – req. HoT

Finally, the Wayfarer’s Henge. This is similar to Mawdrey in several ways: in the time-gating, and in the cheapness. However, overall it is easier to complete (and it doesn’t require LS2 – just access to Draconis Mons from LS3). The cost involved is just 6 each of Charged, Glacial, Molten, and Onyx Lodestones – at the time of this writing that’s barely 10g. The effort involved is a 16-day tour of the Draconis Mons zone, assuming that all hearts are completed each day for the Druid Runestone Fragments, and that the fifth is purchased from Supplymaster Hanjo for 1,000 Unbound Magic, so that each day equals one Druid Runestone.

Anecdotally, it is quite easy to complete everything else necessary for the collection during the grind of the heart quests. The time gating can be somewhat bypassed if you have lots of Unbound Magic and alt characters, as each alt character can purchase one Fragment from Hanjo per day.
